You have heard the old cliché, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.” With all due respect to a brother-in-Christ, Andy Stanley, the “baby” is in the yard.
While I empathize with Mr. Stanley’s motivation and in a limited sense, his views, his conclusion is erroneous, hazardous, shortsighted and overly concerned with his modern hearers. One could debate many assertions in his sermon. The debate would likely center around points that themselves might be controversial—the correct way to understand covenant or dispensation within the Old Testament, the complex text-history that constitutes Old Testaments texts, his repeated assertion that the apostolic community had no “Bible,” the “source of Christianity”, a motivation to jettison Scripture because it offends, understanding the background to Acts 15, and more. …Read More.
